paintings from an old magazine found in a shack on a northern beach

January 18, 2009

In 1998 while sleeping in abandoned shack far along north beach in naikoon park, I found some old german art magazines. I cut ohodler_die_nachtut some images — paintings of a woman rowing furiously in a raging sea, a man with an axe suspended about to cut a tree, sleeping couples with a black figure menancing over a frightened man, circles of skinny, naked women. I found these images again today while going through a file folder of pictures, graphics and magazine clippings. I looked up the artist and found out he is the swiss symbolist painter, Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918).

a book found, a familiar odyssean journey of a girl

January 5, 2009

I found this story about this book last night. An Odyssean journey of a girl through the streets of a regular city but fantastical to look for her father who has disappeared. This sounds too familiar!! OK but my story is a different — there is aspects of the fantastical city, and the darkened corners of possibilities, but there is also the liminal port and the sea and the connections of the city with the rural and the ocean between, as well as that other world on the other side of the ocean and islands. always islands. and it is a graphic novel.

i will need to read this and take it as inspiration. already i have realized i do not have enough of a voice in my story. i have censored myself quite a bit. a joust between narrative and poetics, between reality and imaginings, between political groundings and myth.
